$25 will be donated to the Ottawa Humane Society for every portrait purchase.

Honouring non-human members of the family

Furry friends, feathered friends, or more peculiar creatures, all contribute to the quality of our lives in so many ways. I would love to help you honour your pet by painting or sketching a portrait.

How to Portrait your Pet

Contact me if you would like to discuss what you're looking for. Have a look at the considerationspage to get an idea of things I'll want to know when we speak. You'll be providing me reference photos but I will also want to know about your pet's personality and any special trademarks that need to be included!

To begin the work I'll be asking for a deposit. You will only pay in full once you're happy with the result!

As I do the portrait you can expect me to send you photos of the work in progress. I'll be looking for feedback to make sure I'm capturing your pet perfectly.

I will hand deliver the portrait if you're near me; otherwise, it will be carefully packaged and shipped to you. When your portrait arrives, prominently display it!

Meet the artist
Andrie Nel

I am a lover of all furry creatures! When I was seven years old my mother came home with two pet skunks – Gus and Daisy. They joined a roost of budgies, a cat, and goldfish. And things just got better from there! By age 10 I was going on the dog show circuit, showing my Whippet and my mom’s Borzoi. And for  the rest of my youth my parents and their 4 children competed with 13 dogs for spots on the couch!

As an adult I've always had fur babies.

The one on the left is Ruby. She was one of 85 dogs rescued from a puppy mill gone bad.

With lots of love and rehabilitation she became as naughty as the others. I painted her portrait after she passed away and to this day, I look at it bursting with love knowing her final years were happy.

Since Ruby I’ve painted many other pets for friends and family – each with their own special story. You can visit some on the pet wall!

I am now retired and am sharing my love for animals and art with like-minded fur parents. And contributing to the welfare of future pets at the Ottawa Human Society.
